Now that (I think) we can say spring is finally creeping its way in, it feels right to start thinking about lighter and brighter foods and drinks.

Hopefully, soon we will be able to mix one of these up on a Friday and sit outside for a relaxing and warm summer evening.

Or, we can just make some Mexican food and pretend we're somewhere that doesn't still have traces of snow on the ground.

The Classic Cuban Mojito Recipe

A mojito is a pretty simple drink. However its combination of sweetened citrus and mint take just enough edge off of the white rum to make this a perfect summery drink.

Fresh mint leaves are essential to capturing the classic mojito flavor, This makes it the perfect summer drink to use up your fresh garden mint. (Ours is always taking over the garden by late summer.)

Making a mojito is so simple:

  • Combine lime juice, sugar, and mint
  • Muddle
  • Add rum
  • Pour over ice

That it! Your drink is served and it's time for a summer sipper!

Is A Mojito Cuban Or Puerto Rican?

We've seen a lot of debate over whether the mojito cocktail originated in Cuba or Puerto Rico.

Some mojitos use Puerto Rican rum and some use Cuban rum. From what we can tell, the type of rum you use is really the defining factor for if you're making a Cuban Mojito or a Puerto Rican Mojito.

But, no matter the rum you use, it's pretty well documented that the mojito originated in Havana, Cuba.

So, we have a Cuban drink. But choose your rum, and you can change the 'type' of mojito you're serving!
